PINNING DOWN GRAMMAR—The Basics You Need To Know As A Writer by Rachel Carrington

START DATE:  This class is currently closed.

END DATE:

DURATION: 2 weeks

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Grammar gets a bad rap, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. Forget the textbooks and step into the ring to learn how to pin grammar to the mat.

In just two weeks, you’ll do battle with apostrophes that make your life difficult, wrestle with verb tenses, and get down in the dirt with basic punctuation. In just two lessons, you’ll gain a better understanding of the pesky grammar rules and make your editor’s job easier!

Feedback will be provided on all assignments.

I appreciated the class [Jumping into Romance] and received so much more from it than the two community classes I had taken.

Are you new to writing and the publishing/promoting world looks too large to handle? Are you a seasoned writer but lack the necessary skills and ideas necessary for a powerful promotion of your work? Look no further than the promotional ideas and suggestions given by Ms. Carrington.

Writing the story is only the first step to sales and a loyal fan following. As Ms. Carrington has said in her Power Promotion Workshops, “I would encourage you all to start writing for each other’s newsletters as well as other authors you know. I was just asked to write some tips for authors in another author’s newsletter. That’s how you get your name out there. Make yourself stand out from the crowd. Be creative. Get together with a group of authors and shoot around some marketing/promoting ideas.” In addition to these suggestions are many more that empower the writer through knowledge of the promotional game and how it’s played.

For the author who sells primarily online, or even marginally, the helpful suggestions in Ms. Carrington’s workshops are a must!

Thanks to your promotional workshop, I embraced the Scavenger Hunt Idea and participated in a Holiday Hunt with several authors. This proved very beneficial. In less than four weeks I had over one hundred hits to my website and increased my sales. I'm very glad I attended your workshop.

The class was enlightening, humorous, and filled with common sense. Directions where to go for further information was nice. It’s easy to put off the work of writing for the fun. You made me realize the need for work. Thanks!

WEEKS AT A GLANCE:

Week 1: Apostrophes and Other Tricky Punctuation

Is it their, there, or they’re? And do I put a comma there or should it be a semi-colon? Punctuation can be tricky. You think you have it right, but it doesn’t look right on paper or in your email. While grammar checks can be helpful, they can’t answer everything. So this week, we’re going to learn quick and easy tips to know when to use the apostrophe and when you shouldn’t and basic punctuation that will improve your writing both on and offline.

Assignment: Complete the worksheet provided and return for instructor’s review. Your assignment will be graded and returned. You’ll be provided with information to help if you’re still having difficulty.

Week 2: Don’t Get Tense—Understanding Verb Tenses

Let’s face it. The English language isn’t an easy one to master, and verbs make it really difficult. Should you use choose or chose? Lose or loose? Was thinking, am thinking, or thought? What is the different between past tense and present tense?

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to choose the right tense every time with a simple formula, and we’ll also have a go at those pesky helping verbs.

Assignment: Complete the worksheet provided and return it for review. Your work will be graded and returned with some helpful tips if you’re having trouble.

Materials needed: An Internet connection and email capability.
